Brumous and Brontide

Brumous and Brontide
Project Overview
For this project, I picked a music genre, indie-folk, and was tasked with creating a gig poster for the genre. The style that I went with was very minimalist and a folksy look. I wanted to convey a somewhat childlike, nostalgic, and calming feeling as well as in the choice of my band name. Brumous describes the feeling of a winter day and brontide is the sound of distant thunder.
Sketches
Below are several of my concept ideas that I began with for the general theme that I wanted to pursue that were geared towards memories of growing up and fantastical ideas. Also included are some of the concept sketches of the main idea I chose to pursue and based my digital designs on.
Digital Drafts and Revisions
I went through multiple stages of slight variations of my concept with different details added and different elements being highlighted. There were a few that I changed the background color to something different, however, I continuously went back to white because it played into the wintry, peaceful, and slightly melancholy look that I was going for.
Feedback/Critique
Overall, most of the feedback I received was positive -- some suggestions were to make the ampersand larger so that it balanced out better, fill in the negative space a bit more, mess with different colors and the choice of information included, and experiment with backgrounds.
Final and Conclusion
In the end, I decided to keep it very simple and minimalistic because that is the genre of music that I chose to portray. A large majority of the lines and shapes that I created were meant to have a slight hand-drawn feel to them that also ties in that child-like story or folktale that I am emanating. My gig poster does a good job of portraying the basics of the genre that I wanted to show and leaves room for the viewer to complete the image with their mind.
